Kate Furman: Signed and Attributed Drawings

Catherine Eliza Furman, called "Kate" or "Sister" by her family, was born January 29, 1858 to John Howard and Susan Miller Furman. She attended boarding school in Salem, North Carolina from 1870 to 1872, then returned to her family at Cornhill Plantation in South Carolina. Kate was still living with her family in 1882.

According to letters from her mother, Kate studied drawing at boarding school. Four of the drawings in the Furman Family Papers are signed by Kate, and five others have been attributed to her based on style and technique.
