Abstract: Letter dated July 19, 1863 and signed by J. H. Mitchell of the 17th Illinois Volunteers. Mitchell writes home with news of the surrender of Vicksburg and mementos from the evacuated Rebel positions nearby. The final two pages contain lines of verse copied by Mitchell that had been \"found in the rebel trenches near Vicksburg after the surrender of that city.\" It is unknown who penned the verse, but it describes in rhyme the final days before the loss of Vicksburg.
