Carl Hantman

Shootout at Big Muddy
, Oil, 39" x 28" ©

Carl Hantman is a traditional oil painter of the Old West. Hantman, who believes artists should get as much professional training as possible, studied at the University of Miami and the Art Students League (New York City). He worked as a commercial artist creating more than two hundred paperback covers, particularly Westerns, for every major publisher. Ideas for new works come from Hantman's collection of more than 5000 stills from old Western movies, as well as clothing, gear, and artifacts. He starts with postcard-sized oil sketches, then develops more detailed renderings until he sets the final composition.

The painting Shootout at Big Muddy hangs in the Pearce Collection next to a copy of the paperback illustration for the book "Gunsmoke over big muddy" by Frank O'Rourke.
